PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Works & Services Department Government of Sindh, in association with the Public Private Partnership Unit of the Government of Sindh invited bids to dualize the existing National Highway N-5 from Karachi to Thatta. The main objective of this Project was to enhance the road quality of existing N5 highway, The larger economic benefit of this Project is linked with connecting this corridor from Thatta onwards to Mithi, taking it further down to Islamkot and Thar - carrying over all road length to 296 km.


The Request for Proposal for the Karachi Thatta Dual Carriageway Project was published on 21st of August 2013. In response to the RFP, three bidders namely, China Railway First Group Co. Limited, Deokjae Construction Company (Pvt) Ltd. and Frontier Works Organization submitted their technical and financial proposals on 15th January 2014. After the comprehensive bidding process the Frontier Works Organization was selected as the Preferred Bidder for the project and the Concession Agreement was signed on 7th of May, 2015. The financing documents were signed on 29th December, 2016 and the construction works for the Project is complete.

SOCIAL IMPACT OF THE PROJECT

1. This project has significantly enhanced the road quality of the N-5 highway.

2. The previous corridor in this region was narrow and dangerous and led to many traffic accidents. The old road was also poorly maintained which led to higher maintenance costs and longer travel times. Alleviation of these problems has greatly improved regional commercial activities.
